Cite Unseen is a Wikipedia user script that annotates references with compact icons derived from their URLs and citation metadata. The indicators surface source type and medium—such as news, opinion, books, blogs, social media, or sponsored material—alongside community-maintained reliability classifications. They are prompts for investigation, not automatic verdicts about whether a citation is appropriate in context.
When categorised sources are present, the script adds a dashboard for filtering the reference list by category. Hover details, per-user category settings, domain overrides, and a suggestion workflow make the classifications inspectable and extendable rather than opaque. The underlying source lists combine community-curated domains with consensus-based lists from multiple language editions of Wikipedia.
The project began at CredCon in 2018, jointly developed by Kevin Payravi and Josh Lim. In 2025, I built a version 2 prototype on Chinese Wikipedia; it was later merged into the main project, and I joined as a maintainer. The refreshed tool subsequently became a popular user script among Wikipedia projects, with ongoing work on features, multilingual support, and source-list coverage.
